Enriching Education in Urban Slums
Pune city has 503 slum pockets in Pune city and it is estimated that 40% of the total population of Pune city lives in slums. The children growing up in slums face adverse conditions at every turn of life. Surajya Sarvangin Vikas Prakalp (SSVP) aims at providing an enabling environment to these children. It runs study-rooms (Abhyasika) in 8 slums of Yerawda near Pune.
SSVP volunteers run free tuitions and study-support programs for children in slums. Akshar Bharati – an initiative by Symantec and Seva Sahayog has supported SSVP in starting libraries at their slum centres. Libraries coupled with “Culture of reading” activities have been a landmark value addition to the efforts of SSVP in enriching education in urban slums. Akshar Bharati is currently supporting other NGOs in Seva Sahayog network to run Library projects.
SSVP runs Sanskar Varg (character-building centres) for children and youth. It has also organised adolescent girls under its Kishori Vikas activities. Volunteers from KPIT Cummins are helping SSVP in running computer coaching as well as in games and extra-curricular activities for children in slums.
SSVP is an initiative of Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti, a registered Trust (Regd. No. 30/8/72/768)
